Senior Dog Photography: Why Carly’s Portraits Mean Everything Now

I’ve had the privilege of photographing dogs at every age and every stage. But senior dog photography holds a very special place in my heart.

Last week I bumped into a former client at an event. We started catching up, and she shared something that I haven’t stopped thinking about since. By the end of our conversation we were both a little teary, and I walked away feeling every bit of why I do this work.

This is her story. And honestly, it’s the reason I pick up my camera every single day.

A Session Full of Love and a Little Bit of Hope

When this family came to me, they had a beautiful golden retriever named Carly. She had already survived one battle with cancer, but they knew, with the quiet heartbreak that pet owners in that situation know all too well, that it likely wouldn’t be the last.

They wanted images of Carly full of life. Joyful. Herself.

And there was something else. Their daughter was getting married the following summer, and Carly might not be well enough to be there. So we made sure Carly would be there, one way or another.

The Wedding

On their daughter’s wedding day, Carly’s presence was felt throughout the day. Her images were woven into the celebration, a beloved family member honored exactly as she deserved to be.

I can only imagine what that moment felt like.

The Image That Starts Every Day

Carly passed not long after our session. And when her mom stopped me at that event last week, she told me about the artwork hanging in their home. About how every single morning, she walks past it. About how she looks at Carly, full of life and full of light, and carries that image with her into her day.

“This is the image that sends me on my way each day.”

It’s exactly why this work matters so much to me.

She also left me this review, and I want to share it here exactly as she wrote it because it says everything:

“Donna did a wonderful job capturing our Golden. She had survived one cancer, but we knew it wouldn’t be the last and we wanted images of her, full of life. Also, our daughter was getting married the following summer and if our dog couldn’t be there in person, we wanted images of her to be there. We now have wonderful images hanging in the house. One in particular, puts a smile on my face everyday. Donna really understands dogs and their special bond with us.”

Why Senior Dog Photography Can’t Wait

I am a photographer. But what I’m really doing, every single session, is building something that will outlast all of us. A piece of art that greets you in the morning. An image that carries someone you love through every room of your home, long after they are gone.

If you have a senior dog, or a dog facing illness, please don’t wait. Senior dog photography sessions are a gift you give yourself and your family, and last for many, many years to come.

Carly is on that wall every morning. And that is everything.

If you’re ready to create something that lasts, I’d be honored to hear your story.

Spring Is Here, Let’s Treasure these moments.

Why Spring Is the Most Beautiful (and Fleeting) Time to Capture Your Best Friend

There’s a moment in early spring, you know the one. The air shifts, the light softens, and suddenly the world is alive again. Your dog feels it too. You can see it in the way they lift their nose to catch the breeze, the extra bounce in their step, the pure, unfiltered joy of just being outside after months of grey skies and cold pavement.

That moment? It deserves to be on your wall forever.

The Magic of a Spring Session

Spring in New England is nothing short of extraordinary and unfortunately, can be very brief. The cherry blossoms at the Public Garden don’t wait. The daffodils bloom and fade in what feels like a matter of days. The wildflowers tucked along a quiet woodland path have their own quiet, fleeting season that most people never even notice.

But we will.

Whether we’re strolling through a sun-drenched garden bursting with color, or wandering a hidden forest trail where the light filters through new leaves like something out of a painting, spring gives us a backdrop that simply cannot be replicated any other time of year. Warm golden sunshine. Lush green grass beneath your dog’s paws. Blossoms everywhere you look.

This is the season of joy, and your dog is the perfect subject for it.

Before the Crowds Arrive – Spring Beach Sessions Are Available

Here’s a little secret that locals know well: right now is the best time for a beach session. Before the summer crowds descend and the parking lots fill, the shoreline belongs to us. Wide open stretches of sand, dramatic skies, and a dog who has never looked more free.

If a beach session has been on your wish list, now is the perfect window. Warm temperatures, but without all the pesky people everywhere. But it won’t last much longer.

Let’s Plan Your Perfect Spring Session

Every session I create is as unique as the dog at the center of it. Maybe your vision is romantic and garden-soft, think cherry blossoms, dappled light, and your pup looking absolutely regal among the blooms. Maybe it’s adventurous and soulful, a woodland path, dew on the ferns, your dog mid-leap over a mossy log.

Whatever your vision, I’d love to help you bring it to life.

Spring is fleeting. The blossoms will fall. The wildflowers will fade. But the images we create together? Those live on your walls, in your albums, and in your heart for a lifetime.

Reach out today to reserve your spring session, and let’s shake off those winter blues together.

Donna

Printed Photographs Matter More Than Ever in a Digital World

We live in a time when almost every moment is photographed. Our phones are full of images, social media feeds overflow with snapshots – and yet, paradoxically, the printed photographs we actually live with are rare. The ones that we can hold in our hands or hang on our walls. The ones we walk past every day.

Growing up, our house was filled with photographs of generations of my family. I got to see them every day, hear the stories, and feel part of something lasting and larger than me.

My parent’s wedding photograph hung in the living room my whole life

We are the most photographed generation in history – and somehow the one with the least tangible evidence of our lives. We scroll endlessly, searching for a photo to show a friend, and most of our favorite images are buried somewhere in a camera roll we never revisit. And here’s what people say they regret most when they lose their homes or possessions: the photographs. Not the furniture. Not the things. The photographs.

Because photographs are more than decoration. They are memory made visible. Presence made permanent. The moments we treasure, given a place to live.

Which is exactly why printed photographs of our families matter so much – and dogs are a huge part of our families. They steal our hearts, our laps, sometimes even our socks. The moments we share with them deserve more than a swipe. Our first day together, a romp in the woods, the way your dog looks at you when no one else is around – these are the details that shape our lives and remind us what matters.

That’s exactly why I do what I do. I photograph dogs and the people who love them, and turn those sessions into portrait artwork and custom albums that become a genuine part of your home. Beautifully made, thoughtfully designed, and meaningful enough that you’ll wonder how your walls ever lived without them.

If you’d love to have that – for your dog, in your home – I’d love to make it happen.

Real Images for Dog Businesses That Love Dogs as Much as You Do.

If you run dog-focused businesses, you already know something important:

Dog people can spot “fake” a mile away.

They know when the image is stock.
They know when the dog looks stressed.
They know when a brand doesn’t actually understand dogs.

That’s where I come in.

I create authentic, strategic imagery for dog brands, trainers, pet product companies, and service-based businesses who truly love what they do. From passionate solopreneurs to established commercial brands, my goal is the same: create images that feel real, natural, and aligned with your values.

Because in this industry, connection is everything.

It’s Not Just About Pretty Photos

Beautiful images are lovely. But commercial photography should do more than look good.

It should:

  • Help your audience immediately understand what you offer
  • Show the experience of working with you
  • Highlight the benefits of your products or services
  • Build that essential know, like, and trust factor

When someone lands on your website or Instagram, they’re making quick decisions.

Do I trust this brand?
Do they understand dogs?
Would my dog be safe and happy with them?

Authentic imagery answers those questions before a single word is read.

What That Looks Like in Practice

It means dogs who look relaxed and genuinely engaged, not stiff or overwhelmed.

It means capturing real moments between dogs and their people.

It means showing your product in use, your service in action, and your brand personality woven throughout.

It also means patience. Reading body language. Knowing when to step back and when to lean in. (And occasionally waiting for that perfectly timed head tilt. Totally worth it.)

The result is content you can use across your website, social media, email marketing, launches, ads, and print. Cohesive visuals that elevate your brand and support real growth.

dog walking businesses can benefit from warm, authentic professional images
businesses featuring pets tend to have an increase in consumer trust

Why It Matters More Than Ever

We’re all consuming content constantly. The brands that stand out aren’t the loudest. They’re the most authentic.

Dog people invest in brands they trust. They choose businesses that feel aligned with their values. They support companies that clearly love dogs as much as they do.

Your imagery plays a huge role in communicating that.

Let’s Create Something Tail-Wag Worthy

If you’re building or scaling a dog-centered business and want imagery that reflects the heart behind your work, I’d love to collaborate.

Strategic. Relaxed. Thoughtful.
With a whole lot of heart and just enough humor to keep it real.

Because your brand deserves more than generic visuals.

And in the dog world, authenticity isn’t optional.

It’s everything.

If you’re a dog-centered business ready for imagery that truly reflects the heart behind your work, I’d love to connect. Let’s create something strategic, beautiful, and completely aligned with the dogs and people you serve.

Reach out and we’ll start planning.

Warmly,

Donna

Portraits as Special as your Working Dog

photographing working dogs is a specialty of mine, here a saluki chases a lure during a Lure Coursing event.
working dog herding sheep, australian shepherd
a Newfoundland dog leaps from a boat during a water working dog test

Your working dog isn’t just an athlete, they’re your partner, your teacher, and family. The trust built through countless hours of training and the quiet understanding between handler and dog creates a bond unlike any other. Capturing a working dog in their element, whether it’s herding, hunting, agility, or flying through the air – is about more than motion. It’s about celebrating that connection, the energy, and the joy you share. Every jump, turn, or sprint tells a story of teamwork, dedication, and love and those are moments worth preserving.

Over the years, my photography of dog sports has been internationally published and featured on multiple magazine covers. I traveled all over the Northeast photographing dogs navigating agility courses, chasing lures, herding sheep and working in the field, learning to anticipate every turn, jump, and burst of energy. But competitions come with limitations: angles, lighting, and positioning are never fully in your control. That’s where private sessions make all the difference. Away from the constraints of competition, we can create dynamic, active portraits tailored specifically to your dog. Images that capture their skill, athleticism, and joy in motion.

For handlers, we know it’s about so much more than performance. It’s the long hours of training, the quiet communication, the shared victories and setbacks, and the deep trust that grows over time. My goal is to translate that energy and bond into portraits you can enjoy every day. Artwork that celebrates not just what your dog does, but the partnership you’ve built together.

I know this personally . My Golden, Rio and I competed in Hunt work, Agility and Obedience. My current Border Collies, Believe and Asher LOVE agility and I’m hoping to start herding training with Ash this spring. I’ve seen firsthand how dedication, trust, and love create dogs who are thoughtful, talented, and who share an incredible bond with me. My sessions for working dogs and their people are about capturing all of it: the work, the connection, and the joy that makes your dog who they are.

If you love your working or active dog and want to see them captured at their best, I’d love to create images that showcase their energy, skill, and the bond you share. These aren’t just action shots – they’re portraits of a partnership, designed to live in your home as artwork and albums, not just on a screen.

Interested? Let’s plan your dog’s perfect session.

Warmly,

Donna

Session Spotlight – A Frenchie Supermodel at Wingaersheek Beach

Some pups show up ready for their close-up, and Romeo was *that* dog from the moment he hopped out of the car. This adorable Frenchie knew he was a supermodel and I was along for the ride.

He’s just a year old, a charming little Frenchie with a big personality and an even bigger heart. His mom adopted him this past June after he made his way up from Texas through Sandy Paws Rescue, and you can tell he knows he hit the jackpot. Romeo adores people, other dogs, toys – truly, anyone or anything willing to admire him. And honestly? He deserves every bit of it.

Our session at Wingaersheek Beach was nonstop joy. Romeo ran full tilt across the sand, launched himself off tiny dunes, proudly chased his shark toy, and soaked up all the love and snuggles from his mom. And then, as the sun started to set and the sky turned those beautiful soft colors, he settled right in and gave me the sweetest poses among the rocks and tidal pools.

He’s playful, loving, expressive, and just an all-around delight. I can’t imagine who gave this dog up, but they don’t know what they’re missing!

Spending the evening with Romeo felt less like work and more like hanging out with a very small, very enthusiastic friend who just happens to be a secret supermodel.

Session Spotlight: Dogs, Woods, and Autumn Light with Pepper & Sanya

It was the kind of fall day with golden light, crisp air, and just enough fall color to make you want to stay outside forever. Marisa and Philip chauffeured their girls, Pepper and Sanya to Hopkinton State Park on this beautiful October afternoon for their portrait session. Pepper and Sanya are both rescues, adopted as puppies, and you can feel how deeply they are loved.

Pepper, a 4-year-old ACD mix, is pure enthusiasm. She’s all about the next adventure, the next trail, and the next person who might be willing to share their lunch. An avid hiker, Pepper is well on her way to conquering all 48 of New Hampshire’s 4,000-footers with Philip. And if her happy trot is any indication, she wouldn’t complain if a few more adventures found their way onto the list

Sanya, a 4-year-old German Shepherd, brings a softer, thoughtful energy to the pair. She’s tuned in, gentle, and deeply connected to her people. While Pepper is ready to charge ahead, Sanya is happiest knowing everyone is together and things are just as they should be.

The afternoon was filled with exploring the trails, wading in the lake and plenty of breaks for treats and love. Pepper did her thing, Sanya did hers, and Marisa and Philip soaked in the moment with their girls. It was relaxed, playful, and exactly how sessions are meant to feel.

In the end, Marisa and Philip chose a stunning framed portrait of Pepper and Sanya together. This piece will bring the joy of that fall afternoon into their home long after the leaves have fallen.

This session was a great reminder that the magic isn’t about perfect poses. It’s about letting dogs be who they are. Celebrating what makes them different, and creating something meaningful that lasts long after the leaves have fallen.

Pepper and Sanya, you were an absolute delight and I loved every minute with you all.

Donna

Reflecting on the Year with Gratitude, Dogs, and Daily Joy

Finding Gratitude (and Dog Hair) Everywhere

As the year winds down and the days grow colder, it’s natural to take stock. To pause, breathe, and reflect on all that has come before. The holiday season is a natural time for gratitude, but the older I get (and the more dogs I’ve loved), the more I realize that practicing gratitude throughout the year is what truly transforms our lives.

And honestly? No one models joy and presence quite like our dogs.

The Dogs I’m Eternally Grateful for 💖

Portrait of a border collie among spring blossoms in Melrose, MA
Asher has my eternal gratitude for this sweet, focused loving personality

They don’t need grand gestures or perfect days. A walk in the woods, a ball thrown (over and over and over again 😊, a treat (maybe five), and our company – that’s enough to light up their world. Even on the hardest days, their joy, loyalty and unconditional love remind us what really matters.

This year, I’ve found myself especially grateful for the small, quiet moments: the gentle thump of a tail, the way a Believe nudges my hand when life feels heavy, the clients who trust me to capture the love they share with their pups and the friends and community who make even the challenging days feel lighter.

The world can feel heavy and uncertain – we all know it – but gratitude doesn’t ignore that. It simply asks us to notice the light that’s still here. The laughter, the muddy paws, the warm noses, and the moments of connection that remind us we’re not alone.

As the New Year arrives, I hope we can all take a moment to soak it all in. Give our dogs an extra scratch behind the ears, call a friend we love or just sit quietly and feel grateful for all the small, beautiful things that fill our days.

Because when we practice gratitude – not just at the holidays, but all year long – we see how rich our lives really are. Especially with a dog (or three) by our sides.

Happy New Year to everyone reading this and I’m hoping 2026 give us all so much to be grateful for.

Warmly,

Donna

Celebrating Dogs, Community and a New Year Ahead

Reflecting back

As the year winds down, I always find myself slowing just a bit. Turning inward (maybe hibernating a bit..). Taking stock of what worked, what surprised me, and what I’m carrying forward into the new year (and what I’m gently leaving behind).

This past year was full of meaningful moments. Dogs I fell completely in love with. Clients who trusted me with something deeply personal. Artwork going up on walls where it will be seen and loved every single day. That part never gets old. It’s why I love this work I do.

new wall art ready to ring in the new year

Like any year, there were challenges, moments of doubt, quiet stretches and lessons that nudged me to listen more closely to myself and what really matters to me. I was reminded that being clear and aligned is far more important than simply staying busy. When I create from a place that feels true and thoughtful, everything else comes together.

Looking forward to the new year

As I look ahead, I’ve chosen a word for 2026: visibility.

Not in a loud, performative way. Not hustle-for-the-sake-of-hustle. But in a grounded, intentional way. Showing up more in my community, saying yes to events, conversations, and collaborations that feel right. Maybe even a book project in the works… Letting more people know I’m here. Letting them meet me, talk dogs with me, see my work in person, and decide if it resonates.

Because the truth is, the dogs have always been at the heart of this business. And the people I love working with most are the ones who love their dogs fiercely. Who understand that these years are fleeting. Who want to honor that love in a tangible, lasting way. I want to spend more time with those people – and visibility is how that happens.

So as the calendar turns, my hope for the coming year is simple: more connection, more presence, more moments that matter. More dogs. Always more dogs.

running into the new year!
Bounding into 2026!

Thank you for being part of this journey – whether you’ve been here for years or you just found me. I’m so grateful, and I can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings.

Here’s to a new year, wide open with possibilities.

xoxo

The Gift Every Dog Lover Will Actually Treasure This Holiday

Forget the Big Box Stores – Give a Gift That Means Everything

Every year it happens — the rush of holiday shopping, the endless scrolling, the scramble to find the “perfect gift”. We fill our carts with gadgets, sweaters, and things we’re not even sure they’ll ever even open… because that’s what we’re supposed to do, right?

But the truth is, the most meaningful gifts rarely come wrapped in shiny paper or with two-day shipping. They come from the heart – and they tell a story.

If you share your life with a dog, you already know what I mean. Their joy, their devotion, that soulful gaze that says you’re my favorite person in the world. These moments deserve to be seen and remembered. And that’s where photographic artwork comes in.

A custom portrait session isn’t just another “thing.” It’s a way to celebrate the bond that makes every day brighter, and to create something lasting that brings you joy long after the decorations are packed away.

Imagine walking past a framed portrait of your dog every morning. Seeing that look of pure love and happiness greeting you before your first sip of coffee. That’s the kind of gift that never loses its shine.

The perfect holiday gift for the dog lover in your life - framed artwork of their furbaby

Thoughtful Gifts, Crafted Close to Home

And here’s something else that makes it even more meaningful: when you choose gifts like this, you’re not just giving a loved one an unforgettable experience, you’re also supporting a small, local business. A business that pours it’s heart, time, and love into every single session. You’re helping keep creativity and craftsmanship alive in your community, instead of sending another order through a faceless big-box retailer.

So this year, skip the forgettable stuff (did someone say “chia pet”…) and give something that will mean everything: a timeless piece of art that honors their best friend and the love they share – while also doing a little good in the world around you.

So skip the boring socks and mugs—give a gift that truly wags tails! Grab a Gift Certificate for a portrait session and make a pup (and their person) the happiest on the block. And right now my Session Gift Certificates are $100 off through the end of November – just $150 (regularly $250). It’s a beautiful way to celebrate the dogs we love and create something that will bring joy long after the holidays are over.

Warmly,

Donna
